LINDA’S LETTER FALL 2025
We are busily preparing for the May 5, 2026, County Primary Election. The ballot includes 25 positions. Some voters will also see school board seats.
To vote in an election, your Voter Registration Application must be received in our office, or postmarked, 30 days before the election. To register in Shelby County:
Tennessee law requires that you list a reason to vote absentee.
We begin accepting Absentee Ballot Applications 90 days before an election. The deadline to request an application is 10 days before Election Day. You can drop the application off at one of our offices, or mail it to 980 Nixon Dr. Memphis, TN 38134.
You can request it by mail or phone. Download and print this Absentee Ballot Application [link to form]. After completing and signing it, scan it – or take a photo – and email it to [email protected] no sooner than 90 days before the election. You may also drop your application off at our office or mail it to 980 Nixon Dr. Memphis, TN 38134. You may request an application by phone at 901-222-6807.
The first Absentee Ballots are mailed 45 days before Election Day. Those go to members of the military and U.S. citizens living overseas. Afterward, we mail ballots to people who have requested one. We mail them in the order we received the applications. The earlier you request an absentee ballot, the sooner you receive it.
Tennessee law requires you to provide your complete SSN.
Yes, unless you have Permanent Absentee (click here) status, which requires a section for your doctor to complete. A letter is mailed to those with Permanent Absentee status before each election. It includes an application.
No. Each person must request an absentee ballot him- or herself.
During a primary election, the Democratic and Republican parties are choosing the candidate that will represent them in the general election. Occasionally, a state and federal race may occur at the same time. Those are always separate ballots, so if you don’t want to declare a party, request only the general ballot.
No. You are not required to vote in any race. You may skip one or more.
