Shelby County Election Commission leaders are asking absentee voters registered in Shelby County to keep an eye out for a supplemental ballot arriving in their mailbox before Wednesday, July 15. The FedEx tracked mailing comes after a processing omission resulted in approximately seven hundred incomplete ballots being sent to absentee voters.

The majority of the affected ballots omitted the 30th judicial races for circuit court, chancery court and criminal court positions. A smaller pool of the affected ballots omitted the referendum to amend the Shelby County charter to allow the use of independent legal counsel for the Shelby County Commission. The supplemental ballot ONLY contains information the voters’ initial ballot was missing.

In addition to the FedEx mailing and broad communication alerting the affected absentee voters of the supplemental ballot, election officials are also calling affected voters where contact information is available.

Election officials say the affected voters should fill out and return the ballot that arrived earlier this month, as well as the supplemental ballot which will arrive this week
.
The two pieces can be mailed separately, and postage has been provided for each supplemental ballot. All ballots are digitally coded, which ensures only one vote per voter for each race.

Unaffected voters will not receive a supplemental ballot and should just fill out and return the ballot that arrived earlier this month
. If the voter is unsure, they can call election officials at 901-222-1200 to verify their status.

“We understand, especially in this political climate, that there’s heightened interest in the election process. Transparently acknowledging and quickly correcting the omission is vital for maintaining election integrity and voter trust,” said Linda Phillips, Administrator of Elections for Shelby County.
